OCTOBER SPEAKER:
The Honourable Omar Alghabra, Former Minister of Transportation
Mr. Alghabra’s business career was highlighted as a global business leader for General Electric’s Industrial Refurbished Parts business.
His transition into the political arena first took place when elected into the Parliament of Canada in 2006 – then again in 2015. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and later the Minister of International Trade Diversification. He was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs. From there he was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council in 2020. He became Minister of Transportation in 2021 and served for two years in that role. He has since retired from politics and comes to us today as a Canadian citizen - a highly skilled man with extensive knowledge and understanding of the processes which govern this fair country.
Mr Alghabra will share with us his wealth of knowledge on a topical issue which as piqued the interest of many people in this part of Ontario - the proposed Alto high-speed train rail. Proposed to be the first of its kind in Canada this line would run from Quebec City to Toronto reducing congestion throughout that corridor while cutting travel time in half.
The project was first approved when Mr. Alghabra was Minister of Transportation. He will share insights on how the project developed and got approved. He will address the scope and purpose along with the benefits and risks.
He is NOT speaking on behalf of the government nor the current minister of transportation and will not be able to answer questions on their behalf.
However, a casual information session will be fascinating to listen to and provide us with a clarity from which we will all benefit on this topic.
How fortunate we are to have someone of Omar Alghabra’s calibre come to Peterborough and address our membership.
You won’t want to miss this very interesting man and his presentation.
See you WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7th – 10:00 am
